The world’s largest-ever gathering on nature-finance opened in Chile on Tuesday, as over 130 countries rallied behind global biodiversity goals, exploring bold innovations — from nature bonds to repurposed subsidies, from fintech to nature credits — to unlock sustainable funding for conservation in an era of declining international aid.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The 6th Global Conference on Biodiversity Finance will take place from 6 to 8 May 2025 in Santiago, Chile.
This high-level gathering will bring together delegates from 133 countries to explore a wide range of solutions for financing biodiversity. Discussions will focus on key areas such as financial sector engagement, positive incentives, impact investment, repurposing harmful subsidies, community involvement, and more.
Since 2012, UNDP’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) has supported 41 countries in developing biodiversity finance plans. In 2024, the initiative expanded under the GEF-8 umbrella program, welcoming 92 additional countries, bringing the total number of participating nations to 133.
Building on previous conferences held in Bratislava, Slovakia (2014); Los Cabos, Mexico (2016); Chennai, India (2018); a virtual edition with the OECD (2020); and Cape Town, South Africa (2023), the 6th conference will further refine strategies, mechanisms, and methodologies for biodiversity finance.
